Today was Nebraska all day. Long drive and the speed limit here is 75. Serenity will not drive 75 so it put us at a disadvantage on the road with so many cars going substantially faster than us. It was a very demanding day. Our destination is Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area. It’s a huge lake and tons of “beach” space with lots of folks just pitching tents or driving their RVs down to the shore. We have full hook ups here meaning we can flush out tanks here just before we pull out in the am.
The day was full of stress and as we neared the campground, I was ready to be out of the driver's seat. That’s when that driver side running board gave up two more screws and started to violently dance and bounce on the pavement at 65 miles per hour. Luckily the shoulder could accommodate us and I was able to remove the running board completely. Where before I had trouble reaching the now departed screws, the two remaining screws fell to my socket set quite quickly. The very scary moment was when I realized the calamity and whacking had disturbed the RV’s suspension enough to trigger a series of warnings about the ABS and the Stabilitrack computer. While she felt fine to drive, we eased her off at the next exit and gave her a break. After about 2 minutes of shutdown, the restart of the engine did not clear the "service needed" warnings. After some debate, we decided to try and nurse Serenity to the campground then wait and see if I needed to get her serviced in the am. Well, that was not required. After our 20-minute debate, we restarted Serenity, and she cleared all her sensors and everything read nominal on the message panels. Ha! Crisis averted? Crisis ignored is a crisis averted? Don’t care. We were back on our way with only a missing running board to show for it. However, Commodore Bierenbaum is a bit fried. Tomorrow is Wyoming!
